Description
A Taste of Maltese Heritage
Maltese Coffee is a traditional blend deeply rooted in the island’s history. Influenced by Mediterranean trade routes and centuries of cultural exchange, this unique coffee reflects how spices and coffee once arrived together through Malta’s busy ports. It’s a flavour profile passed down through generations—bold, aromatic, and unmistakably local.
Our Maltese Coffee Blend celebrates the island’s rich and centuries-old coffee culture. Coffee was introduced to Malta as early as the 16th and 17th centuries, when Turkish Muslim slaves brought their traditional brew to the islands under the rule of the Knights of St. John, making coffee one of the first places in Europe to embrace the drink. Domenico Magri, a 17th-century priest, wrote that coffee was already “widely practiced” in Malta long before it became common elsewhere in Europe.
The Blend
Our Maltese Coffee combines carefully selected Arabica and Robusta beans for balance and strength, enriched with chicory, aniseed, and cloves. The result is a full-bodied cup with natural sweetness, warm spice notes, and a lingering, comforting aroma that sets it apart from conventional blends. Chicory, aniseed, and cloves — a traditional flavour profile rooted in local custom and ingenuity. Chicory historically became part of Maltese coffee when it was widely cultivated on the islands and used to stretch precious coffee supplies, especially during times of scarcity.
Perfect brewed in a French Press or as a Filter Coffee, our blend evokes the comforting ritual of a traditional Maltese kafè msajjar — long simmered and savoured with family and friends.
