Description

From the Monsoon Winds of India’s Malabar Coast

About the Region

Along the humid, spice-scented shores of southwestern India, the Malabar Coast has long stood as one of the most distinctive coffee-growing regions in the world. Shaped by seasonal monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea, this coastline creates an environment unlike any other. Warm air, heavy humidity, and oceanic airflow define the character of the coffee itself.

Coffee cultivation here takes place inland at moderate elevations, where tradition and climate work hand in hand. Historically, this region played a vital role in the maritime spice and coffee trade, with green coffee once exposed to long sea voyages that unintentionally transformed its structure and flavour. From this accidental evolution, the iconic Monsoon Malabar profile was born.

About the Process

Today, producers carefully recreate this natural phenomenon through a controlled monsooning process, preserving a centuries-old tradition while ensuring consistency and quality. After harvest, ripe Arabica cherries are sun-dried, hulled, and graded, with AA lots selected for their size and uniformity. These beans are then stored in open-sided warehouses during the monsoon season, where they are exposed to moisture-laden winds between June and September.

Over the course of 12 to 16 weeks, the coffee slowly absorbs the humid coastal air. The beans expand, soften in colour, and develop a distinctive structural transformation that reduces acidity and enhances body. Regular turning and careful handling ensure even exposure, creating a uniquely consistent and stable cup profile. Once the monsooning is complete, the coffee is meticulously re-sorted and prepared for export.

In the cup, Monsoon Malabar Arabica delivers a bold, smooth and deeply comforting profile. Low in acidity and rich in body, it offers a grounded, earthy sweetness with a soft spice-like warmth and a mellow finish that lingers gently on the palate.

A coffee shaped not just by land, but by wind, sea, and time itself.

There’s more behind this Brazilian coffee than what’s in the cup.
